Taika Waititi in Talks for Role in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad

Deadline brings word that actor and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, What We Do in the Shadows, Avengers: Endgame) is currently in talks to appear in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. No details have yet been revealed about the potential role. This marks Waititi’s second time playing a character in a DC film, having previously appeared in 2011’s Green Lantern.

The outlet notes that there is a table reading for the sequel on September 11. Production is expected to start on September 23.

Waikiki would be joining a cast that so far includes Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, and Jai Courtney who are all reprising their roles for The Suicide Squad. Idris Elba is leading the newcomers, including David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, Flula Borg, Nathan Fillion, and Steve Agee as King Shark.

The movie is written and directed by Gunn. Chuck Roven and Peter Safran will serve as producers. Nik Korda is executive producing the movie.

Waititi recently wrapped production on his comedy war drama Jojo Rabbit, which will be released on October 18. His upcoming onscreen roles also include The Mandalorian pilot, Free Guy, and What If…?. Behind the scenes as a writer, director, and producer, the busy filmmaker is working on Thor: Love and Thunder, We’re Wolves, Time Bandits, Flash Gordon, directing an episode of The Mandalorian, and working on Season 2 of What We Do in the Shadows.

The Suicide Squad will hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
