The Pacific Rim Sequel is Still Happening

Pitch Perfect 3 has taken the place of the Pacific Rim Sequel.

Pitch Perfect 3 may be taking its previously-announced release date, but a Pacific Rim sequel is still on the way

There’s some very good news today for fans of Guillermo del Toro‘s epic Kaiju showdown, Pacific Rim. Last month, it was reported that the Pacific Rim sequel had been removed from Legendary‘s schedule of upcoming films. Today, Universal Pictures has clarified the change with an official statement.

“Legendary’s ‘Pacific Rim 2,’ originally scheduled for release on August 4, 2017, will be redated at a later time,” it reads. “The filmmakers, Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having ‘Pacific Rim 2,’ the sequel to 2013’s ‘Pacific Rim,’ which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of ‘Pacific Rim’ so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.”

Taking the place of the Pacific Rim sequel will be Pitch Perfect 3, originally planned for release on July 21, 2017. Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson are already confirmed to headline the returning cast with writer Kay Cannon returning to the team to pen the next chapter.

Pitch Perfect 3, currently the only major release scheduled for August 4, 2017, will be produced by series fixtures Paul Brooks of Gold Circle Entertainment and Max Handelman & Elizabeth Banks of Brownstone Productions.

The Pacific Rim sequel, then, will offer the follow-up to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 epic action-adventure, with a script penned by del Toro, Jon Spaihts (Passengers, Prometheus) and Travis Beacham. Universal Pictures will release the film worldwide in 3D and IMAX.

Pacific Rim hit theaters in summer 2013 and grossed just $101 million at the domestic box office but went on to take in over $400 million worldwide. The film starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman.
