New Movies on Blu-ray/DVD

The Florida Project

Director Sean Baker’s critically-acclaimed film about a young girl living in a seedy motel in Florida with her wild young mother resonates with gorgeous imagery and affirmative moments even amid the most squalid of circumstances. Willem Dafoe was justly nominated for Best Supporting actor for his sympathetic turn as the hotel’s super.

Daddy’s Home 2

Stars Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell return for this slapstick sequel, featuring Mel Gibson and John Lithgow as their respective dads. The Blu-ray includes deleted, extended and alternate scenes, making of featurettes and a gag reel.

Same Kind of Different as Me

Greg Kinnear, Renee Zellweger, Djimon Hounsou and Jon Voight star in this moving drama about a couple whose marriage is renewed upon forging a friendship with a homeless drifter.

The Star

A small but brave donkey and his animal friends become the unsung heroes of the first Christmas in this faith-based animated movie.

Mom and Dad

Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair star in director Brian Taylor’s insane film about two kids who must survive 24 hours during which a mass hysteria of unknown origins causes parents to turn violently on their own kids.

Reissues

The Covered Wagon

The very first big-budget epic western from 1923 comes to Blu-ray from Kino Lorber in an edition that includes a rich audio commentary by Toby Roan, an essay booklet and a one-reel spoof “The Pie-Covered Wagon” from 1932 starring Shirley Temple.

Hell or High Water (4K)

The acclaimed 2016 neo-western starring Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine and Ben Foster arrives on 4K, telling the compelling story of a two desperate men who decide to rob the branches of a bank while a Texas Ranger is hot on their trail.

Mad Foxes

This trashy exploitation gem from 1981 comes to DVD from Full Moon in an edition that includes a making of doc as well as an interview with actor Eric Falk.

New on Digital HD

Thor: Ragnarok

Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) brings his trademark sense of humor to the Marvel Universe with this hilarious intergalactic adventure. Mark Ruffalo returns as The Hulk, but it’s Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster and Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie that steal the show.

Murder on the Orient Express

Kenneth Branagh puts his own contemporary spin on Agatha Christie’s classic whodunnit, both directing and starring as the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. The film’s all-star cast also includes Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley and Johnny Depp.

TV on Blu-ray and DVD

The Master: The Complete Series

This ninja-themed TV series aired on NBC for a scant 13 episodes in 1984, and a movie version of the first two episodes titled “Master Ninja” was given the Mystery Science Theater 3000 treatment in 1992. It’s a bonkers premise about a WWII vet who stayed in Japan and became a ninja, only to leave in the 80’s to find the daughter he didn’t know he had, getting into various adventures along the way in his custom van.
