Former WWE star Chris Jericho, the first-ever AEW World Champion, recently opened up about his retirement. Jericho, who began his pro wrestling career in the early 1990s, made a name for himself in WCW.
Jericho’s career began in WCW before making a dramatic splash in WWE in 1999, interrupting The Rock’s promo. The weeks leading up to his debut were marked by a cryptic countdown to the new millennium clock on WWE programming. Soon after, he quickly rose to prominence, consistently embroiled in feuds with top stars like The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Triple H, and Kurt Angle.
Chris Jericho, who had a nearly two-decade-long career in WWE, had already cemented his place as a future Hall of Famer with countless achievements. However, in 2019, Jericho decided to bet on himself and joined the startup promotion called AEW. This bet proved to be a masterstroke for him. He became the inaugural AEW World Champion, defeating Hangman Page at All Out.
Since 2019, Jericho has been delivering top performances in All Elite Wrestling. He has also played a role in developing young talents such as Sammy Guevara, MJF, Orange Cassidy, Darby Allin, Ricky Starks, and others. Throughout the years, Jericho has remained a key figure in Tony Khan’s promotion. Recently, as he approaches his 53rd birthday in November, Jericho has discussed the possibility of retiring from wrestling.
Chris Jericho claims he can still deliver top matches in AEW
Former WWE star Chris Jericho recently appeared on the “McGuire on Wrestling” podcast, where he discussed various topics, including retirement. The former AEW World Champion expressed that he will know when it’s time to retire. He mentioned enjoying himself and making significant contributions while still being capable of delivering top matches frequently.
He stated, “I’ll know when it’s time [to retire]. I’m having a lot of fun and still contributing significantly. I can still deliver top matches on any given night — not always, but often enough. I love what we’re doing with AEW right now, so there’s no hurry to retire. When the time comes, I’ll know. For now, as long as I’m having fun and feeling good in and out of the ring, there’s no reason to stop.”
Chris Jericho, a veteran in the wrestling business with over 30 years of experience, has stated that retirement is not in his plans at the moment. It will be interesting to see what more he can achieve in All Elite Wrestling.
