John Cena’s Honest Take on Dave Meltzer’s Star Rating

WWE superstar John Cena recently provided insights into Dave Meltzer’s star ratings, a system often used to critique wrestling matches. Meltzer, a respected journalist in the wrestling industry, is renowned for publishing his comprehensive coverage and star rating system in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

During an interview on 92NY, Cena responded to a question regarding his acclaimed 4.75-star match against AJ Styles and the possibility of aiming for a perfect 5-star rating. Cena acknowledged the significance of star ratings in providing recognition and equity for performers but emphasized that his priority lies in entertaining the audience.

Cena stated, “So how do I put this… I am much more concerned when I perform for WWE in how the audience as a whole feels about my performance rather than one individual trying to grade me in a level of stars. Not that it doesn’t matter, because that is a great way for those to try and get equity and try to get noticed. It’s a great ranking system and I do appreciate it. I’m not knocking critics. I’m just saying my process is to make sure that everyone who paid a ticket had a great night.”

He continued, “And if that gets me a zero star match, I still know in my heart of hearts that I entertained my audience that night.”

Cena expressed gratitude for the rating system but emphasized his commitment to delivering memorable performances for the fans, regardless of critics’ assessments.

How many five-star matches does John Cena have in his career?

According to the influential rating system by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, John Cena’s career includes one five-star match. This achievement occurred in 2011 at Money in the Bank against CM Punk. However, the excitement surrounding Cena’s most acclaimed bouts remains undiminished. On two occasions, Cena came close to securing another five-star match.

One notable instance unfolded at the 2015 Royal Rumble. In a thrilling Triple Threat match against Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins, Cena delivered a stellar performance, earning a remarkable 4.75-star rating, despite ultimately losing to Lesnar.

Two years later, Cena pursued history in a championship clash against AJ Styles. This epic encounter also received a 4.75-star rating, this time with a victorious outcome for Cena. This win marked his record-tying 16th WWE Championship reign, matching the legendary Ric Flair’s achievement.
