Potential match for Gunther at WrestleMania 40

Many fans had anticipated a showdown between Gunther and former WWE Champion Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 40. However, on January 25, a lawsuit filed against Vince McMahon delivered a significant setback, implicating unnamed parties, including a “WWE Superstar” alleged to be Brock Lesnar. Despite Lesnar not being directly named in the lawsuit, WWE removed him from future appearances.

With reports indicating Brock Lesnar’s absence from WWE programming for an extended period, it looks like plans for Lesnar vs Gunther have been scrapped. However, WWE still has alternative options for Gunther’s opponent at WrestleMania 40.

A pivotal moment in Gunther’s journey occurred when he faced off against Chad Gable last year. Gable secured victory via count-out in August 2023. Although Gable failed to defeat Gunther for the title in a subsequent match in September, their encounters garnered significant interest, particularly with Gable’s daughter present ringside. Gunther’s actions, including making Gable’s daughter cry before laughing about it, fueled Gable’s determination to seek redemption and dethrone Gunther.

WWE could potentially book a third match between Chad Gable and Gunther for WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia.

Gunther Achieves Major Milestone in WWE

Gunther continues to make history in WWE. Since his spectacular triumph in June 2022, winning the Intercontinental Championship, he has proven to be an indomitable force in the ring. Facing formidable opponents like Ricochet, Braun Strowman, Drew McIntyre, and Sheamus, Gunther has solidified his dominance.

Breaking records along the way, he surpassed the record for the longest reign with the Intercontinental Championship on September 7, 2023, dethroning The Honky Tonk Man’s 35-year-old record. Most recently, he defended his title against Kofi Kingston on the January 29 episode of WWE Monday Night Raw.

Following this victory, he has now achieved another milestone, reaching 600 days as WWE Intercontinental Champion. The Ring General’s reign began on June 10, 2022, when he defeated Ricochet to win the championship on an episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown. With WrestleMania 40 on the horizon, anticipation mounts to see who will step up to challenge the reigning champion on the grandest stage of them all.
