Justin Theroux joins the Netflix series Maniac alongside Emma Stone and Jonah Hill
Justin Theroux (The Leftovers) has been cast in the upcoming 10-episode Netflix series Maniac, according to Deadline. He’ll join Emma Stone (La La Land) and Jonah Hill (21 Jump Street) in the dark comedy series. Cary Fukunaga (Beasts of No Nation) is set to direct all of the episodes, and the show was written by Patrick Somerville. Shooting for the Paramount TV/Anonymous Content series is just beginning in New York City.
Maniac is based on the 2014 Norwegian series and is largely set in the fantasy worlds of the characters that Hill and Stone play. Justin Theroux will play the role of James Mantleray. There is no official word on who Mantleray is, though the site reports that he’s believed to be playing an alcoholic doctor in the mad scientist vein.
Maniac will be executive produced by Stone, Hill and Fukunaga with Michael Sugar and Doug Wald from Anonymous Content, Kruke Kristiansen and Anne Kolbjornsen, and Espen PA Lervaag and Kjetil Indegard. Ashley Zalta will be co-executive producer.
Justin Theroux is known for his work in the films Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire with director David Lynch, Wanderlust with his wife Jennifer Aniston, and The Girl on the Train with Emily Blunt. He played the evil DJ in Zoolander. Theroux was a screenwriter for films like Tropic Thunder, Iron Man 2, Rock of Ages, and Zoolander 2. He plays Kevin Garvey in the HBO series The Leftovers.
