Chloe Bennet Talks Daisy Johnson, Adding Ghost Rider to Agents of SHIELD

If the flash-forward at the conclusion of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD is any indicator, the cast will be in some all-new and unexpected places when the fourth season begins, but for Chloe Bennet’s Daisy Johnson it’s a deliberate choice.

“She’s hurting from what’s happened the past couple of seasons and I think her way of protecting the people she cares about, Coulson and the team and SHIELD, is to really isolate herself,” she tells IGN. “I think she feels like when she gets close to people they die or something bad happens to them. Wherever she goes, death follows. I think she feels that way and I think she’s trying to stay clear of the team as some sort of mechanism to protect them and herself.”

The new season won’t just feature the returning characters from the series but also the addition of Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes, aka Ghost Rider. Bennet spoke about the addition of the character and pondered how science nuts Fitz and Simmons would properly explain a man possessed by a demon.

“I was curious. It is always a little scary and you want everything to work well, but Gabriel is wonderful and fits in perfectly with the cast and I’m excited to see where they go with it. All the powers so far have been really rooted in something that Fitz and Simmons can always explain. I’m curious to see how they tie in a flaming head/skull on fire, and how they explain that with science.”

In light of the Sokovia Accords, and with Hydra obliterated, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been legitimatized again and no longer needs to operate in the shadows. Since the world presumes that Coulson is dead, the organization needed a new Director to be the face of the organization. Coulson finds himself back in the role as an agent and teamed with Mack, and together they are tasked with tracking down and confirming the presence of Enhanced people, aka Inhumans. They have been trying to track down and capture Daisy, aka Quake, who has gone rogue in an attempt to atone for sins from the past. But with the world believing that Daisy is a dangerous outlaw who has taken down banks and bridges, the new Director has no qualms about taking her down for good. Agent May is tasked with training specialist strike teams, and Fitz and Simmons have taken a big step forward in their relationship. But with Simmons’ new promotion as Special Advisor to the Director in Science and Technology, Fitz, as well as her former team members, finds it hard to confide in or trust her since she’s now the Director’s confidant.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD stars Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Agent Daisy Johnson, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons, Nick Blood as Agent Lance Hunter, Adrianne Palicki as Agent Bobbi Morse, Henry Simmons as Agent Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie and Luke Mitchell as Lincoln Campbell. The new season will also feature Jason O’Mara as the new director of SHIELD.

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD returns Tuesday, September 20 in its new timeslot, 10:00 PM ET on ABC.
