The Blade Runner 2099 TV show has revealed an intense first look at Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer-portrayed characters. The brand-new series is heavily based on the original movies in the iconic sci-fi dystopian franchise.
What do we see in the first look at Blade Runner 2099?
The first-look images have been revealed for the Blade Runner 2099 TV series. They show Yeoh as a replicant Blade Runner, Olwen, and Schafer as her partner, Cora, who is actually a human.
The series is directly connected to 2017’s Blade Runner 2049 featuring Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, and Ana de Armas, among others. It was helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve.
Meanwhile, Blade Runner 2099’s story will take place 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, which was a sequel to 1982’s Blade Runner by Ridley Scott. The new TV show will also depict a transformed Los Angeles after so many years.
“There’s been a replicant uprising that feels like it’s been bubbling up,” said Blade Runner 2099’s showrunner Silka Luisa while talking to Entertainment Weekly. “And between 2049 and 2099, that’s happened. So the war has happened, and the humans have lost. Our worst fears imagined.”
“The replicants are now the power brokers of the city,” she added. “And humans are the second-class citizens.” Simply because the humans lost in their war against replicants.
Blade Runner 2099 won’t just follow the stories of the first two movies but also the very novel that inspired this massive cinematic world, Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Highlighting the key theme of the show, Luisa mentioned that it’s “really imagining what comes after us, and what does it mean to be human in a world where humanity is no longer relevant?”
While it does connect the dots to the movies, fans won’t really see any characters from them in this TV series. Instead, Blade Runner 2099 will feature an entirely new set of characters. Luisa explained, “We are taking place so much in the future that obviously none of the same characters are around.”
At the same time, Blade Runner 2099 is having a panel during the San Diego Comic-Con tomorrow, Friday. It may reveal the official trailer as well, but nothing is officially confirmed at the moment.
Blade Runner 2099 is expected to premiere at some point in 2027 on Prime Video.
