Prime Video has expanded the cast for its much-anticipated series Sex Criminals. The series adapts the bizarre and beloved Image Comics title into an eight-episode caper that mixes intimacy, crime, and frozen time.
Joseph Lee and Sunita Mani join Sex Criminals cast
Joseph Lee lands the role of Detective Franklin, while Sunita Mani takes on a character named Lucy in Sex Criminals. Amazon MGM Studios reportedly confirmed both actors have signed on for significant recurring parts, though plot specifics for their characters remain under wraps.
Lee rides into the project on a wave of acclaim. His performance in Netflix’s Beef opposite Ali Wong and Steven Yeun got him his first Emmy nomination. He will next appear in Apple TV+’s Neuromancer alongside Callum Turner.
On the other hand, Mani brings her own indie-comedy pedigree to the series. Audiences will recognise her as Arthie from Netflix’s GLOW, but she most recently got popular as Priya in the limited series His & Hers, sharing the screen with Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal.
The duo will now be working alongside Imogen Poots and John Reynolds, who lead Sex Criminals cast as Suze and Jon. Pamela Adlon, BD Wong, Ayden Mayeri, and Ashleigh Cummings round out the ensemble. Series co-creator Kumail Nanjiani also steps in front of the camera in a recurring role.
Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky first unleashed this story in 2013, crafting a comic that defied easy categorisation. Sex Criminals centres on Suze, a woman who discovers she can stop time when she has sex. But her life changes upon meeting Jon, who shares the same unusual ability. Rather than using their power for something else, the couple embarks on a spree of bank robberies.
Tze Chun runs the show as series showrunner and co-creator alongside Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon. Nia DaCosta directs half the season, including episodes one, two, seven, and eight, and joins the executive producing team.
Gordon, Nanjiani, and Dani Melia executive produce through Winter Coat Films. LuckyChap’s Chun and Dani Gorin also produce, with Fraction and Zdarsky attached to shepherd their creation to screen.
