From Creators on Why Season 4 Finale’s Most Brutal Deaths Had to Happen

With the explosive finale of From Season 4 ending with the deaths of two major characters, program creator John Griffin and showrunner Jeff Pinkner have come out to explain their decision to kill off such major players before Season 5. In a recent interview, the duo expanded upon the tragic demise of Marielle (Kaelen Ohm) and Elgin (Nathan D. Simmons) in Season 4, Episode 10, and how their departure would affect the sci-fi horror series’ upcoming final installment.

John Griffin and Jeff Pinkner break down From Season 4 finale’s two deaths

During the conversation, the creative duo revealed that while Marielle’s death in the latest From episode will have a lasting impact, Elgin’s killing has a simpler explanation.

Talking about Marielle’s relationship with Kristi (Chloe Van Landschoot), John Griffin noted to Collider, “They would bicker from time to time, but their relationship had returned. It felt like, for a relationship like that, where it feels like, ‘Oh, that has to mean something,’ this is something that Kristi struggles with in the aftermath. It’s like, what did it mean? What did that magical reunion mean if that was the way that it was going to end?”

In the From Season 4 finale, Marielle dies in a brutal manner at the hands of the creature Smiley after an earthquake knocks the talisman off the clinic’s wall. Meanwhile, Elgin is killed by the Man in the Yellow after he refuses to betray his faith.

“Sometimes taking a story in that unlikely direction where you feel like it’s setting up for something very special and very important, only to have the rug ripped out from under you, as life sometimes does when people leave us at the most unexpected of moments…I think for Kristi, it’s a really challenging process to go through, and really puts her character on a path in Season 5 to struggle with things,” Griffin added. “What happens when the person who fixes broken things can’t fix herself?”

Meanwhile, explaining Elgin’s death in From Season 4, Episode 10, Jeff Pinkner stated, “I think that the decision to kill Elgin was that there needed to be consequences to the bad guy being in town, pretty much full stop. Nathan is a spectacular actor, and he’s a phenomenal addition to the cast, but being in Fromtown is dangerous, and Sophia is dangerous.”
