Moon Knight Writer Explains Leaving Oscar Isaac MCU Project Over ‘Creative Differences’

Jeremy Slater, who was the head writer of Marvel’s Moon Knight series, revealed why he left the show mid-way through the production. According to him, Marvel Studios focus on keeping its initial batch of shows producer-driven, along with creative differences with the director, led him to leave the show.

What did Jeremy Slater say about Moon Knight?

Slater opened up about his experience working on the show while promoting Mortal Kombat II, which he also wrote. Speaking with THR, he spoke at great length about his experience assembling the Moon Knight writers’ room, and its eventual fallout.

“Yes, but I certainly don’t want to say anything bad or negative about Marvel or my time there,” said Slater. “They took a chance on me, and they let me assemble a really great writers’ room. I was really, really proud of the work that we did. The end result was I left the project over creative disagreements with the director. The two of us simply had very different visions on what the show should be about. Ultimately, he won that creative battle, so I stepped away. He then brought in his own team of writers to create a show that was his vision and the story that he wanted to tell.”

It’s unclear which director Slater referenced, as Moon Knight had three filmmakers for different episodes, namely Mohamed Diab, Justin Benson, and Aaron Moorhead. Despite creative differences, Slater holds sole credit as creator and head writer.

“It certainly was not a traditional showrunner experience where the writer is the boss. That was not remotely my experience at the time, but I can’t speak to what the process is like now. I know a lot of writers who have gone through the development process at Marvel and have had great times. It’s just that the pairing of writer and director is always really, really tricky. When it tworks — like I think it did on Mortal Kombat II with Simon McQuoid — it is magical and wonderful. But when it doesn’t work, it’s probably really frustrating for everyone involved.”

Following its premiere in 2022, Moon Knight has yet to be renewed for a Season 2. Slater recently revealed that renewal greenlight depends on Oscar Isaac‘s creative interest in reprising Marc Spector/Steven Grant. It’s equally likely that Moon Knight will return to the MCU in a Midnight Sons project, as hinted at by Isaac, though Marvel has yet to officially announce anything on it.

Moon Knight is currently streaming on Disney+.
