With the Invincible Season 4 trailer already establishing that Eve will encounter problems with her powers in the upcoming installment, voice actor Gillian Jacobs has broken down how her character will deal with such a predicament. In a recent interview, the 43-year-old actress talked about Eve’s reaction to the struggles with her abilities, describing a Spider-Man 2-style arc for the matter manipulator.
Gillian Jacobs breaks down Eve’s arc in Invincible Season 4
While speaking over a Zoom call, the Community star revealed that Atom Eve will encounter an identity crisis after she experiences trouble channeling her powers in the fourth season.
“In earlier seasons, she had her powers, but was unsure if she wanted to continue being a superhero. And I feel like she found a way, with this company that she started with Mark, to find a way to use it and feel good about it. But now, I think for the first time since she was a child, she’s really having to grapple with like ‘Who am I without these powers? What is happening?’ And I think it’s something that she’s probably taken for granted. So, it’s a real dilemma for her,” Gillian Jacobs remarked to GamesRadar+.
Towards the end of Invincible Season 3, Eve manages to survive a confrontation with Conquest by the skin of her teeth. With Eve in dire need of a miracle, her body reacts by eliminating the mental block that caps her abilities and allows her to manipulate biological matter. However, the sudden and extreme surge also causes her powers to malfunction in the aftermath of the battle, setting up her arc in Invincible Season 4. In the comics, Eve goes through a similar phase, albeit due to her pregnancy.
Notably, Peter Parker, played masterfully by Tobey Maguire in the Sam Raimi-helmed Spider-Man 2, faces an identical problem as Invincible’s Eve when his web-slinging abilities suddenly stop working. As such, the Marvel superhero has to grapple with an intense identity crisis before he ultimately manages to get a hold of himself.
Meanwhile, Invincible Season 4 is on track to hit Prime Video on March 18.
