Series co-creator Ted Humphrey calls the twist “world-changing” for Mickey. He says it disrupts him personally after a season focused on professional turmoil.

Humphrey explained to ScreenRant, “We’ve knocked this guy for a loop professionally, now let’s knock him personally, and make him question everything about who he is or what he thought he knew about himself.” Smulders’ character introduces a new family dynamic and raises questions about Mickey’s identity and past, forming the basis of season 5’s storyline.

The revelation of Mickey’s sister marks a shift in narrative strategy. Humphrey said, “We felt it was important to do it from a personal angle and not from just another case.” Season 5 will explore how this development affects Mickey’s found family, including his ex-wives, daughter, and legal team.

In the original book series by Michael Connelly, Mickey has a half-brother, Harry Bosch, but due to rights held by Amazon, Bosch cannot appear in Netflix’s series. Humphrey explained Smulders’ character allows the show to “create new stories, but use that template.”

Humphrey clarified that Smulders does not replace Bosch. Instead, she plays “somebody inside the tent” essential for character-driven stories. “It felt like not an opportunity to just do that with a different person, but an opportunity to create new stories,” he said.
