Gina Rodriguez, Daniel Cormier in Talks to Star in Warrior Series for Paramount+

The 2011 fight film Warrior is set to be turned into a 10-episode ongoing series, according to a report from Deadline.

The new series will be developed by Lionsgate Television and Paramount+, with Gavin O’Connor — who directed the 2011 film — reportedly in talks with retired, two-weight UFC champion and Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier and Gina Rodriguez to play two of the four main combatants taking part in mixed martial arts matches.

The 2011 film starred Tom Hardy as former U.S. Marine Tommy Riordan, who enters a winner-takes-all mixed martial arts tournament called Sparta to try and win $5 million. The television series will reportedly be completely different from this premise, however, and will instead focus on “the heart, desperation, and demons that compel fighters to excel in the cage.”

The drama will be co-created with Adair Cole, who will also serve as executive producer and showrunner for the series alongside O’Connor. According to Deadline, O’Connor will direct and showrun all 10 episodes of the series, with Paramount+ now beginning treatment and script writing on the series. The report mentions that O’Connor is looking to cast the final two fighters and any additional side characters now.
