Peacock has officially given a straight-to-series order to the upcoming television adaptation of Dead Day, based on AfterShock’s bestselling comic book series of the same name. The project hails from Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson (Scream), who are reuniting after creating the hit supernatural series The Vampire Diaries.
“Dead Day combines an exciting, high-concept premise with relatable characters and real emotion,” NBCUniversal Television and Streaming’s president of scripted content, Lisa Katz said in a statement. “We jumped at the opportunity to work with Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, who not only have tremendous individual track records with their high-quality storytelling, but have created magic together before.”
First published in 2020, Dead Day was written by Ryan Parrot, who will serve as a consulting producer on the upcoming adaptation. It will be written and executive produced by Plec and Williamson, who are both set as co-showrunners.

“We have been looking for a project to do together and Dead Day has all the ingredients we love as storytellers.” Plec and Williamson said. “Love, death, thrills and tears — and we know Susan Rovner and her team at Peacock is the perfect fit for this project.”

The logline notes that “the series follows an ensemble of characters as they navigate the annual “dead day,” when for one night the dead come back to complete unfinished business — be that to celebrate a night back on earth or to torment the living.”

Dead Day is a production by Universal Television. It will be executive produced by Ben Fast, Emily Cummins and Lee Kramer, Jon Kramer and David Sigurani for AfterShock Media.
This marks Plec’s latest collaboration with Peacock as she is currently in production for the streamer’s upcoming young adult supernatural drama Vampire Academy.
