The first look at the series features some brief narration and a lot of series protagonist Ryo Hazuki punching and kicking a lot of people. However, there was not one forklift in this 74-second trailer.

Series creator Yu Suzuki is an executive producer while Chikara Sakurai, known for One Punch Man, will be directing the anime. There will be 13 episodes that follow Ryo as he goes from Japan to Hong Kong to seek revenge for this fallen father. Many voice actors from the games will return, but it will also feature some new voices, too.

According to swimpedia on Twitter, the Shenmue New York Comic-Con panel stated that it’ll have backstory not seen in the games, will see Ryo talk to others around the street, and feature places like Yokosuka, Hong Kong, and Kowloon. Pointing out that Ryo talks to others on the street may seem odd, but it is a big part of the video game series. Crowds and NPCs will be getting a lot of attention in the anime according to an October 2020 interview with Suzuki and Yu Kiyozono, the anime’s producer.
