Adventure Time Spinoff Fionna & Cake Gets Series Order at HBO Max

HBO Max has officially picked up a brand new Adventure Time spinoff series to Cartoon Network’s fan-favorite and acclaimed animated series, which will now center around the gender-swapped versions of Finn and Jake. Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake is a half-hour-long young adult animated series that will consist of 10 episodes. The new series comes after nearly four months since the third installment of the miniseries special Adventure Time: Distant Lands made its debut.

Adventure Time truly broke the mold and earned legions of passionate fans in the process,” HBO Max’s SVP of Comedy and Original Animation, Billy Wee said in a statement. “We are thrilled to partner with our friends at Cartoon Network Studios to continue innovating and expanding the Adventure Time universe with this world class team.”

Sam Register, President of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios added, “Adventure Time broke boundaries and was a shining example of how impactful animated storytelling can be. We are excited to partner with HBO Max to carry that tradition on to new heights, lands and magical worlds.”

Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake will be led by fearless sword-wielding adventurer, Fionna and her magical best friend and talking cat, Cake. It hails from executive producer and showrunner Adam Muto, with Cartoon Network Studios set as its production studio.

“With the help of the former Ice King, Simon Petrikov, the titular duo embark on a multiverse-hopping adventure and journey of self-discovery,” reads the synopsis. “All the while a powerful new antagonist determined to track them down and erase them from existence, lurks in the shadows.”

The titular characters first appeared during the original series’ third season, where they were introduced as alternate versions of Finn and Jake. They were created by the Ice King through the fan-fiction stories he wrote. The duo appeared in three more episodes and were also mentioned throughout the series’ run.
