Moana Series in Development at Disney+!
Four years after audiences looked in their hearts to see how far they’d go to look for happiness, Disney+ has revealed they are ready to dive back into the Pacific Islands for a new series set in the world of the Oscar-nominated musical adventure hit Moana!
The new long-form musical series will follow its titular spirited voyager as she ventures far beyond the reef and will see Walt Disney Animation connecting with storytellers from Moana’s home region of the Pacific Islands to continue to tell the authentic stories of wayfinding and other traditions brought to life for generations through oral storytelling.
Moana, first released in November 2016, centered on the strong-willed daughter of a chief of a Polynesian village who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti, but when a blight strikes her island, she sails out in search of Maui, a legendary demigod, in the hope of returning the relic to Te Fiti and saving her people.
The cast for the film, which was written by Jared Bush (Zootopia) and co-directed by John Musker (The Princess and the Frog) and Ron Clements (The Little Mermaid), included newcomer Auliʻi Cravalho (All Together Now), Dwayne Johnson (Jungle Cruise, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), Rachel House (Thor: Ragnarok, Hunt for the Wilderpeeple), Temuera Morrison (Aquaman, The Mandalorian), Jemaine Clement (Legion, What We Do in the Shadows), Nicole Scherzinger (Men in Black 3, Ralph Breaks the Internet) and Alan Tudyk (Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn).
The film went on to gross over $690 million on its estimated $175 million budget and received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, garnering two Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, losing the former to fellow Disney Animation Studios feature Zootopia and the latter to La La Land.
Moana, The Series is set to hit Disney+ in 2023!
