American Crime Story season 3 to cover Clinton impeachment scandal
FX has officially announced that Ryan Murphy’s critically-acclaimed drama anthology series American Crime Story will be making its return for its third installment titled Impeachment: American Crime Story which is set to premiere on September 27, 2020. Written and executive produced by Sarah Burgess, the third season will center on former US president Bill Clinton’s infamous scandal and impeachment that happened during the 1990s.
“FX’s American Crime Story franchise has become a cultural touchstone, providing greater context for stories that deserve greater understanding like the O.J. Simpson trial and saga, and Andrew Cunanan’s tragic crime spree which concluded with the assassination of Gianni Versace,” Chairman of FX Networks and FX Productions John Landgraf said. “This franchise re-examines some of the most complicated, polarizing stories in recent history in a way that is relevant, nuanced and entertaining.
Landgraf added, “Impeachment: American Crime Story will likewise explore the overlooked dimensions of the women who found themselves caught up in the scandal and political war that cast a long shadow over the Clinton Presidency. We are grateful to Sarah Burgess for her brilliant adaptation, as well as Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brad Falchuk, Larry Karaszewski, Scott Alexander, Alexis Martin Woodall, Sarah Paulson and the rest of the creative team and cast.”
Based on Jeffrey Toobin’s bestselling book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President, the series will unravel the national scandal that swept up Paula Jones, Monica Lewinsky and Linda Tripp as principal characters in the country’s first impeachment proceedings in over a century. Lewinsky will serve as one of the producers.
Impeachment: American Crime Story will star Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story) as Linda Tripp along with Booksmart breakout star Beanie Feldstein as Monica Lewinsky and Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford (Masters of Sex).
The third installment will be executive produced by Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brad Falchuk, Larry Karaszewski, Scott Alexander with Paulson, Alexis Martin Woodall, Henrietta Conrad and Jemima Khan also set as producers
The anthology series’ first installment, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, received 22 Emmy Award nominations and it won nine Emmys. It also won the Golden Globe, BAFTA, AFI, PGA, WGA and TCA awards and it was the most critically-acclaimed program of 2016. The second installment, The Assassination of Gianni Versace, which aired last year, has received a number of award nominations with lead star Darren Criss winning an Emmy award and Golden Golden award for Best Actor in a Limited Series.
