FX’s What We Do in the Shadows renewed for season 2
The hilarious vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows has been renewed for a second season, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
From Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, who also wrote and directed the 2014 movie, What We Do in the Shadows will return to FX in 2020.
“Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi and [showrunner] Paul Simms have more than delivered on the high expectations of Shadows fans by adapting the cult classic for television and building a passionate base of new and returning fans. We also want to thank the rest of the creative team, including Scott Rudin, Garrett Basch and Eli Bush, and the incredible cast and crew for delivering such a fun and original series, and we look forward to working with them all on season two,” said FX president of original programming Nick Grad.
What We Do in the Shadows is based on the 2014 vampire mockumentary film of the same name which follows a group of vampires (Waititi, Clement, Jonathan Brugh, Ben Fransham) who live together in modern-day Wellington, New Zealand as they go through the mundane tasks of everyday life and of rooming with other people, as well as bringing in a vampire (Cori Gonzalez-Macuer) just turned by the group.
The film earned rave reviews from critics upon release and quickly became an international cult classic, propelling Waititi and Clement even further into the spotlight as actors, writers, and directors. Since its release, the film has had multiple continuations in development, with a sequel set on the group of werewolves seen in the film led by Anton (Rhys Darby, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) still in active development, as well as a procedural comedy series based on the cops seen in the film as they encounter paranormal events around Wellington.
The new series, which will be written and executive-produced by Waititi and Clement, will also star Matt Berry (The IT Crowd), Kayvan Novak (Early Man), Natasia Demetriou (Year Friends) and Harvey Guillen (The Magicians).
Season 1 of What We Do in the Shadows airs every Wednesday on FX, with its season finale scheduled for May 29.
