Yellowstone Interview: Kevin Costner Takes Pride in Sparking Its Success

After much anticipation, Paramount+ has finally launched in the United Kingdom.

For the occasion, ComingSoon spoke to Yellowstone star Kevin Costner, who portrays John Dutton in Paramount+’s flagship series. Additionally, the Academy Award-winner artist opened up about working in a television series, his thoughts on helping to spark the Yellowstone cultural phenomenon, and more.

Yellowstone chronicles the Dutton family, led by John Dutton, who controls the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States,” reads the synopsis. “Amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds, and hard-earned respect – the ranch is in constant conflict with those it borders – an expanding town, an Indian reservation, and America’s first national park.”

Tudor Leonte: Paramount+ is launching in the UK and we’ve seen streaming really help eliminate the stigma attached to movie stars taking television roles. Were there ever any reservations about doing a television series?

Kevin Costner: No. I think about everything. I have reservations about making certain movies, and when those become so pronounced, I say no. So I have to make up my mind that when this came along, I understood where they were trying to go. I just needed to feel, did this have a chance to 1) make me interested, and 2) could an audience enjoy the same things that I was enjoying about it? So I had to kind of make a fundamental decision about that. I came to the conclusion, “Yeah, I think that people will really enjoy this.” I didn’t predict that it would be a runaway success, but I’m not surprised at all that people do like it to the degree that they have liked it. I think that I couldn’t have predicted that exactly.

As you mentioned, Yellowstone has become a cultural phenomenon. We are seeing all sorts of prequel and sequel series now. What does it mean to be part of the original that really spark it all?

Costner: Yeah, that’s a nice question. I have a special pride in understanding what we launched, what we did, and how we continue to do it. In America, if something works, you just figure out how to keep making that same idea, work, and work, and work. And you do that. You just ring it out until it won’t give anymore. And certainly, they’re trying to do it in an intelligent way, but the original Yellowstone has spawned all these.
