The Crown Season 4 Episode 9 and Episode 10 Recap
In the previous episode of Netflix’s The Crown, Princess Margaret learned of family members who her mother kept secret, and Elizabeth dismissed her press secretary for writing a scandalous article. In The Crown Season 4 Episode 9, a deadly avalanche pushed Charles and Diana to work on their marriage, and in The Crown Season 4 Episode 10, Thatcher faced a political challenge.
While on a ski trip, Charles got caught up in avalanche that killed his friend. In a meeting with Elizabeth and Philip, Diana confessed that the tragedy had made her realize that she could’ve lost Charles. She was still interested in saving her marriage. Diana committed to stop seeing Major Hewitt. She insisted spending their anniversary together at Highgrove. Charles had the place redecorated for her to get rid of signs of his love for Camilla. For their anniversary, he gave her a first edition book about her family lineage. She gave him a video of her performing a Broadway song for him. He confessed to Camilla that he’d hated the gift and wanted to be with her instead.
Charles was distant with Diana again. He had palace officials watch her to report on the second she was unfaithful. They saw Major Hewitt leave Kensington Palace in the early hours of the morning.
Thatcher’s right-hand man resigned from Parliament. During his resignation speech, he denounced the direction Thatcher’s Parliament had gone. She met with members of her party, and they all told her the same thing. They couldn’t support her.
Eventually, Margaret Thatcher was voted out. After she left Downing Street, Elizabeth summoned her to Buckingham Palace. She appointed Thatcher to the prestigious Order of Merit.
New York Loves Diana
Diana was going on a solo trip to New York. She visited a hospital in Harlem on the tour. Some of the children in the pediatric AIDS ward were orphans. She hugged one of the boys after learning of the difficulty they faced with getting adopted because of the stigma. On the news, New Yorkers raved about Diana. However, the success of the trip angered Charles. He saw it as a slight to Camilla since it made her look inferior when compared to Diana.
Christmas at Balmoral
Both Diana and Charles tried to speak to Elizabeth alone at Balmoral during Christmas. However, Elizabeth brushed off Diana and scolded Charles. Philip found Diana hiding away before they were to take the family photo. He tried to encourage her, extoling the importance of the Crown above all else.
