Curry & Cyanide: Did Jolly Joseph Kill Her Family Members?

The infamous Koodathayi cyanide killings were carried out in the South Indian state of Kerala. The accused was a 47-year-old woman named Jolly Joseph. Joseph reportedly acquired the lethal poison from a man named M. S. Mathew, who, in turn, acquired it from a goldsmith named Praji Kumar.

This series of crimes began in the year 2002 and continued until 2019, and involved the death of 6 victims. The accused’s first victim was her mother-in-law, Annamma Thomas. According to Onmanorama, Annamma passed away after consuming mutton soup. After six years, in 2008, Annamma’s husband/Joseph’s father-in-law, Tom Thomas, died. And in 2011, Annamma and Tom’s son, Roy Thomas, also died.

The suspect’s fourth victim was Tom’s brother, M.M. Mathew. Furthermore, a while later, a one-year-old named Alphine died. Alphine’s mother, Sily became the suspect’s sixth victim.

Netflix is going to release a documentary film titled Curry & Cyanide – The Jolly Joseph Case, which will showcase this tragic case. It will be available to stream from Friday, December 22, 2023. Furthermore, it will be available in Malayalam, Hindi, and English languages.

According to Netflix India’s official YouTube channel, the synopsis of Curry & Cyanide – The Jolly Joseph Case reads, “A shocking tale unravels – unexpected deaths spread over 14 years come to light. And at the centre of it all is one woman – the loved and respected Jolly Joseph.”

Did Jolly Joseph attempt to take her own life?

According to The Indian Express, the 47-year-old suspected serial killer, Jolly Joseph, attempted suicide in February 2020. An official said that she tried to slit her left wrist with a blunt object.

The official said, “Fearing such tendencies, we have never kept her in a solitary cell. We put other prisoners to keep a watch on her. Last night, she had covered herself with a quilt so it was hard to see. But when the other prisoners saw traces of blood around her bed, they alerted us and we rushed her to the hospital.”

After this incident, she was rushed to the Medical College in Kozhikode, and she made a steady recovery.
