Instead of a massive blockbuster cinematic event, J.K. Rowling‘s follow-up to her Harry Potter novels is getting a major small screen release courtesy of both HBO and the BBC as we have the first trailer for The Casual Vacancy based on Rowling’s first adult novel.

[amz asin=”0316228583″ size=”small”]Starring Rory Kinnear, Simon McBurney and Michael Gambon, the story begins with the death of Barry Fairbrother (Kinnear) and the small town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations?

Hmmmm, sounds a bit like Hot Fuzz.

Johnny Campbell (“Doctor Who”) directed the two-part miniseries, which will play on HBO on April 29 and 30. Watch the trailer below.
