Watch: First Trailer for ‘Chappie’, New Film from Neill Blomkamp

Maybe I’ll be in the minority on this one but I bit the bullet and watched this first trailer for Neill Blomkamp‘s Chappie and I have to say, I’m not impressed and in fact turned way, way off. The faux sentimentality is practically oozing out of every frame of this thing as Slumdog Millionaire (Dev Patel) makes his very own WALL-E in a world made up of characters from Cloud Atlas with Hugh Jackman playing the robot-hating bad guy. Here’s the plot:

Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.

Of course, maybe I’ll buy into the sentimentality of the piece once it arrives in theaters on March 6, 2015, but this trailer did nothing to sell me. Give it a watch and let me know if you think I’m crazy.
