Someone is going to sit down and write a book detailing the apocalyptic themes of today’s movies because My God! everything is dealing with some shitty future society where one community is separated from another based on class or the world has just been destroyed altogether. This year alone has brought us a pair of zombie apocalypse features in Warm Bodies and World War Z along with the destruction of the American government in films such as Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down, not to mention overrun by a terrorist organization that nukes London in G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
Hellfire rains down in the comedy This is the End and will again in The World’s End and monsters will erupt from the ocean floor in this weekend’s Pacific Rim
Oblivion and After Earth start the decrepit Earth theme, which Elysium and Joon-ho Bong‘s Snowpiercer continue later this year, though the latter separates the classes not in space, but on the ground in a train as Tilda Swinton explains in this new trailer. Oh, and let’s not forget The Hunger Games: Catching Fire where classes are separated into 13 Districts.
Snowpiercer is an adaptation of the French graphic novel “Le Transperceneige,” centering on a story that takes place aboard a train known as the Snowpiercer. The train is carrying the only survivors of a disastrous attempt to prevent global warming that has created an ice age in which the survivors struggle to adapt to existence in the only safe climate.
