While watching this new Only God Forgives trailer I can’t help but think about how disappointed a lot of the people that end up seeing the movie, expecting the film this trailer sells, are going to be disappointed. I hadn’t watched any of the trailers before seeing Only God Forgives in Cannes (read my review here) and even as a big fan of director Nicolas Winding Refn I just couldn’t help but find my own measure of disappointment in the film.
There are going to be people attempting to compare it to Drive, which is 100% wrong. There is no comparison to Bronson either. The closest film from Refn’s oeuvre to compare it to is Valhalla Rising, which is probably the least seen feature in Refn’s filmography.
On the flip side, I’d much rather people be excited to see and discuss this film than pretty much any of the major studio releases this year so don’t let me dampen your mood. Check out the latest trailer, synopsis and two new posters for the film directly below.
Only God Forgives hits theaters on July 19.
Julian (Ryan Gosling), an American fugitive from justice, runs a boxing club in Bangkok as a front for his drug business. His mother (Kristin Scott Thomas), the head of a vast criminal organization, arrives from the US to collect the body of her favorite son, Billy. Julian’s brother has just been killed after having savagely murdered a young prostitute. Crazy with rage and thirsty for vengeance she demands the heads of the murderers from Julian.
But first, Julian must confront Chang (Vithaya Pansringarm), a mysterious retired policeman – and figurehead of a divine justice – who has resolved to scourge the corrupt underworld of brothels and fight clubs.
