Elijah Wood Does A Lot of Scalping in New Red Band Trailer for ‘Maniac’

Franck Khalfoun’s Maniac starring Elijah Wood as the owner of a mannequin shop who develops a dangerous obsession with a young artist played at the Cannes Film Festival this year, but I didn’t have a chance to see it. It has since played in Melbourne, Zurich and most recently Chicago. IFC Midnight holds domestic distribution rights to it and has not yet set up a release date, but it will be hitting French cinemas the day after Christmas and as a result Warner Bros. France has released a new red band trailer for the film for you to consider.

Just sifting through the trailer for the screen capture above I can tell you this is going to be one gruesome picture as that image above is hardly indicative of the blood shed in the trailer alone.

Here’s the complete synopsis:

Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt.

Frank is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank’s obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.

A 21st century Jack the Ripper set in present-day L.A., Maniac is a re-boot of William Lustig’s cult film considered by many to be the most suspenseful slasher movie ever made – an intimate, visually daring, psychologically complex and profoundly horrific trip into the downward spiraling nightmare of a killer and his victims.

You can check out the red band trailer below and I also have another one which was released during the Cannes Festival right here if you’re interested.
