Is There a Chance Kar Wai Wong’s ‘The Grandmasters’ is as Epic as This First Official Trailer?

Kar Wai Wong‘s The Grandmasters was one of my most anticiapted films of 2012. I then predicted it may show up at Cannes this past May, it didn’t, at least not in full. Wild Bunch did preview some footage from the upcoming, long-anticipated feature about martial-arts master Ip Man, the man who trained Bruce Lee, but full film was not yet ready.

It will now get a December 18 release in China, but a domestic release is so far unknown as Annapurna Pictures has yet to set up a distribution plan.

Starring Tony Leung Chiu Wai in the lead role and co-starring Zhang Ziyi, Chen Chang and Hye-kyo Song we now have the first trailer for the film in over a year-and-a-half and it looks spectacularly epic and as visually stunning as you would expect with Philippe Le Sourd (Seven Pounds) serving as director of photography.

After watching this I can only hope The Weinstein Co. lets us know what they plan with this feature sooner rather than later.

UPDATE: A previous version of this post said The Weinstein Co. was going to handle domestic distribution, but that is not the case.
