Watch: ‘The Paperboy’ Trailer Featuring Kidman, Efron and McConaughey

After just The Paperboy — starring Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey and John Cusack — has arrived online.

I caught the film at the Cannes Film Festival this year and wasn’t nearly as negative toward it as so many others, though I can’t say I was over the moon.

In the opening paragraph of my review I referred to it as “a somewhat campy, exploitative, ’70s style feature with thematic hints of A Time to Kill and To Kill a Mockingbird and a second half vibe that reminded me of Cape Fear.” After that I added, “That narrative, however, can’t support the weird mix of serious drama and over the top craziness that come together to create a story that never finds its footing.”

Some of the craziness I’m referring to is a scene where Kidman’s character urinates on Efron’s character. I mentioned the scene in my review, but it was only afterward that I learned Kidman went method for the scene, which, yes, meant a golden shower for Efron.

Millennium Films is set to release The Paperboy in limited theaters on October 5, check out the trailer below and you can give my review a read right here.

I will say this, at about the 40 second mark this trailer goes off the rails and never really regains its footing. I’m not sure if that is good preparation for the film or not as it does tend to travel in some unsuspecting territory. On top of that, there is just too much shown here that may lead you to anticipate where it goes in the end. Then again, what trailer doesn’t show too much?
