The Woman King Featurette Highlights Film’s Historical Inspiration

Sony Pictures has revealed the behind-the-scenes featurette for The Woman King, its upcoming historical epic action drama, which is currently slated to arrive in theaters on September 16.

The Woman King featurette, which you can check out below, highlights to the film’s badass characters. It features commentary from Viola Davis and director Gina Prince-Bythewood as they describe the fearless and real-life women warriors who served as an inspiration for the story.

“It tells the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen,” reads the synopsis. “Inspired by true events, The Woman King follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life. Some things are worth fighting for … ”

Based on real-life events in the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries, The Woman King stars Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Adrienne Warren, Jayme Lawson, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Sheila Atim, and more.

Agojie is also known as the inspiration for the Dora Milaje, a group of women warriors that serve as the Black Panther’s royal guard in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Woman King is directed by The Old Guard filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood from a screenplay she co-wrote with Dana Stevens, based on a story by Maria Bello.
