Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Vol. 1 & 2 Blu-ray Review: Finally Reprinted

Looney Tunes fans have been paying exorbitant prices to get their hands on the Blu-rays of Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Vol. 1 & 2, which were originally released in 2011 and 2012. Long out of print, these premium collections, each featuring 50 beloved shorts, are fantastic treats with three discs full of content on each. Thankfully, a new reprint has arrived, which will save your wallet quite a bit of money.

“50 of some of the greatest Looney Tunes cartoons are together for their debut on Blu-ray! This collection is derived from the original negatives, and the shorts have been digitally restored and remastered. This 3-disc collection contains some of Warner Bros.’ most enduring shorts featuring all your favorite Looney Tunes Characters!” says the official description of Vol. 1. While the Vol. 2 description reads, “Look whose back with more gags, more laughs and more signature showcases! Make way for Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Volume 2 with 50 animated theatrical shorts remastered in stellar hi-def Blu-ray in all their stellar silliness.”

Both volumes contain 50 classic shorts, which feature Bugs, Daffy, Tweety, Wile E. Coyote, and all of your other favorite characters. Sadly, there’s no insert for either of the reprints (despite Vol. 2’s back cover erroneously claiming it has a booklet), so you’ll have to look online to see which cartoons are on each disc if you want to watch a specific one, like 1957’s (such as “What’s Opera, Doc?”). These have all received very good 1080p quality transfers, so it’s a real joy getting to see these classic cartoons in high definition.

The first volume has a heavy focus on Chuck Jones, as he’s directed 29 of the 50 cartoons. He’s also the focus of many of the bonus materials of Vol. 1’s third disc. Meanwhile, Vol. 2 has a more spread-out view of Looney Tunes, with Bob Clampett, Friz Freleng, Tex Avery, and Robert McKimson being featured among some others.

Beyond all of the classic cartoons, and there are some all-time greats here, what really makes Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Vol. 1 & 2 special are the huge amount of bonus features. Each disc includes several featurettes and a smattering of audio commentary tracks. The third disc of each set is primarily bonus materials, which range from additional cartoons to documentaries on Jones, Avery, and more. Not all of the bonus content is in HD, but the wide breadth of informative content makes up for it.

Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Vol. 1 & 2 Blu-ray Review: Final Verdict

These reprints are well overdue, and it’s great that fans can buy the Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Vol. 1 & 2 Blu-ray without paying an insane price. While it’s a slight bummer that there are no inserts saying what is on each disc, these are great versions of two wonderful collections. Fans of cartoons will be very happy with these two releases.
