Dr. Dre Working on a Marvin Gaye Movie

Variety reports that rapper and producer Dr. Dre is making a movie on the late soul singer, Marvin Gaye. Dre is in the early stages of getting the feature off the ground, with rights to Gaye’s music having been secured.

Countless other actors and directors have tried to bring Gaye’s story to life in a feature film or series F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton, The Fate of the Furious), Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, American Beauty), James Gandolfini (The Sopranos, In the Loop), Scott Rudin (No Country for Old Men, The Social Network), Jesse L. Martin (Rent, The Flash), Lenny Kravitz (The Hunger Games, Precious), and Jamie Foxx (Ray, Django Unchained).

Known for songs like  “Trouble Man,” “Sexual Healing,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” and “Let’s Get It On,” the two-time Grammy winner was shot and killed by his own father at the age of 44 in the mid-1980s.

Dre — a.k.a. Andre Young — is a hip-hop legend whose feature credits include 2015’s Oscar-nominated biographical drama Straight Outta Compton, featuring Corey Hawkins as Dre, which chronicled the rise of his hip-hop group N.W.A. He’s also previously acted in features including Training Day and The Wash.
