Alexandra Maria Lara Joins Ron Howard’s Rush

German actress Alexandra Maria Lara (Downfall, The Reader) has been cast in the lead female role for director Ron Howard’s Rush, reports Variety.

She’s joining Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Marvel’s The Avengers), who plays British Formula One racer James Hunt. Daniel Brühl (Inglorious Basterds) is taking on the role of Austrian racer Niki Lauda.

Written by Peter Morgan, the drama “follows Lauda and Hunt’s 1970s rivalry on the Formula One circuit. Lauda nearly died in a fiery crash in 1976 but returned to the track just six weeks later to race Hunt.”

Cross Creek Pictures is financing the film, which Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Howard are producing alongside Working Title partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner and Cross Creek’s Brian Oliver.
