The Croods Sequel Not Moving Forward at DreamWorks Animation

Bad news for Croods fans. DreamWorks Animation and its new parent, Universal Pictures, are not moving forward with The Croods sequel, which was expected to come to theaters in 2018.

Variety says that Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley met with workers at DreamWorks Animation on Thursday to confirm that production of The Croods sequel was being stopped immediately. About 30 employees were working on the film, but it looks like they now will have to find new projects at other companies or within DreamWorks Animation.

The Croods was a hit in 2013 when it earned $587.2 million worldwide on a budget of $135 million.

The Croods is a prehistoric comedy adventure that follows the world’s first family as they embark on a journey of a lifetime when the cave that has always shielded them from danger is destroyed. Traveling across a spectacular landscape, the Croods discover an incredible new world filled with fantastic creatures – and their outlook is changed forever. Directed by Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco, the film features the voices of Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener, Clark Duke, and Cloris Leachman.

While The Croods sequel is cancelled, fans can still watch two seasons of DreamWorks Animation’s 2D-animated Dawn of the Croods series on Netflix.
