Paul Feig is eyeing the director’s chair on a new Mindy Kaling comedy
Fox 2000 appears to have found a director for the upcoming, still-untitled Mindy Kaling comedy that will pair The Office and The Mindy Project star with two-time Academy Award winner Emma Thompson (Howard’s End, Sense and Sensibility). According to Variety, Bridesmaids and Ghostbusters helmer Paul Feig is interested in taking the director’s chair on the project. The trade likens the comedy’s script, written by Kaling, to a combination of The Devil Wears Prada and Broadcast News, set in the world of late night television.
Paul Feig previously worked with Kaling on The Office. Throughout the show’s nine season run on NBC, Feig directed more than a dozen individual episodes.
Mindy Kaling has had quite a few different projects recently. She lent her voice to Disgust in last year’s Inside Out while continuing her sitcom The Mindy Project. The show’s fifth season just debuted on Hulu. Coming up, Kaling is scheduled to be part of the ensemble cast of both Ocean’s 8 and A Wrinkle in Time. The former, directed by The Hunger Games‘ Gary Ross, continues the Steven Soderbergh heist franchise with a cast that also includes Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Nora ‘Awkwafina’ Lum, Rihanna Fenty and Helena Bonham Carter. A Wrinkle in Time, meanwhile, is directed by Selma‘s Ava DuVernay. It will see Kaling as Mrs. Who in an adaptation of the Madeleine L’Engle classic.
The cast of A Wrinkle in Time also includes Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Storm Reid, Gugu Mbatha Raw, Chris Pine, Zach Galifianakis, Andre Holland, Levi Miller, Deric McCabe, Bellamy Young, Rowan Blanchard, Will McCormack and Michael Pena.
