Exclusive: Jay Baruchel Slashing On the Ice and Off

Earlier today, ComingSoon.net had a chance to talk with comic actor Jay Baruchel (Tropic Thunder) about his upcoming raunchy rom-com She’s Out of My League, and he gave us an update on some of the things we last spoke to him from the set of Jerry Bruckheimer’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

Since then, he’s been working on a script for a slasher film called Pig, which he won’t necessarily act in (unless it’s to play someone who gets killed), but he has his fingers crossed that the movie will be his directorial debut. “I’m trying to get that going as best I can, ’cause all I want to do is direct horror movies in Montreal for the rest of my life,” he claimed semi-facetiously. “Without giving too much away, it’s a 21st century reimagining of the slasher film with a lot of socio-racial commentary, that’s all I’ll say.”

He also told us that the “best case scenario” for the hockey comedy Goon he wrote with Evan Goldberg (Superbad) will that it starts shooting in Montreal in August. Having spoken to Kevin Smith about his own planned hockey movie Hit Somebody last week, we were curious what Baruchel’s take would be on the sport. “We like to think of it as a funnier ‘Raging Bull,'” he said. “It’s real mean, and it’s truthful, and it’s everything hockey is without any of the bullsh*t sports movie clichés, and it is dead funny. Lot of swears, that’s a hard R. It’s a very crass movie, there are something like 20 fights in it, but it’s the badass movie that hockey fans have been waiting to see their whole lives. It will be by far the best hockey movie since ‘Slapshot.’ Hockey fans have needed one for a long time, it’s a sport that movies never do well. Ours will be a f*cking movement.” At one point, the movie was going to be directed by fellow Canadian Michael Dowse (It’s All Gone Pete Tong) and they were looking for an actor to play the lead role, but neither was confirmed by Baruchel during our conversation.

He also hopes that the movie he plans to co-star in with Seth Rogen, Jay and Seth vs. the Apoclypse, also co-written by Goldberg, will happen sooner rather than later, although the fact that both he and Seth have a lot going on is making it harder to get that project onto their respective schedules.

“There’s a weird, almost like a triage system here,” he told us. “There are a few things I’m trying to do and it’s just whichever one happens first.”

Look for our full interview with Baruchel before his new movie She’s Out of My League opens on March 12.
