New ‘Star Wars’ Anthology Rumors Include Favreau, Vaughn, Solo, Obi-Wan & Yoda

It seems the closer we get to the release of the first movie in the new era of Star Wars films, the more begins to float downstream. Whether it’s the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, its sequels or one of the Star Wars: Anthology films (stories that take place within the Star Wars universe), there is always some measure of speculation to discuss. To that point, the website Schmoes Know has dropped a few fascinating rumors about two of the Anthology titles and other potential projects.

A second film in the Anthology series for 2018 has previously been reported to focus in on villainous bounty hunter Boba Fett. Chronicle director Josh Trank had been attached to direct, but left the role last month. Schmoes Know provides speculation for both the plot of the upcoming film and who might fill the empty position.

According to their source, Han Solo (likely a younger version and not Harrison Ford) would be a major character in the film, and audiences would finally see why the he and Fett entered the original trilogy at odds with each other. To direct the film, the report cites Jon Favreau (Iron Man) and Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class) as potential suitors. Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca and Bossk (yes, everyone’s favorite dinosaur guy from the infamous bounty hunter lineup in Empire Strikes Back) would also make appearances in the film. This plot would reportedly fulfill Disney’s desire to explore some of the more dangerous crevices of the Star Wars universe.

As for the third Anthology film, Schmoes Know say they hear this film will have a more “mythological and spiritual” feel and that Yoda could be the primary subject for an origin tale. That film is speculated for a potential 2020 release.

In a separate report, the website cites yet another rumor that pegs Disney in negotiations to bring back Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, perhaps for a film or even films of Obi-Wan-centric adventures. The films could see the Jedi watching over Luke Skywalker and could feature Darth Maul (who is still alive, according to “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”) and Owen Lars (played by Joel Edgerton in the Star Wars prequels).

Well, there’s plenty – and I mean plenty – to unpack here, but the most important thing to note is that these reports are not confirmed. They are believable, though. A Solo/Fett movie would keep Disney and LucasFilm from trying to figure out a way to make an entire movie about a bad guy, Favreau and Vaughn are popular studio directors who have proven their mettle with big-budget projects and there was bound to be more Yoda/Obi-Wan at some point in this Star Wars revival.

More Star Wars information should surface this summer at either Comic-Con in July or, more likely, Disney’s D23 Expo in August. I’d imagine we’d at least get a director for the second Anthology project by then. Favreau has a working relationship with Disney (he has helped with Marvel Studios’ Avengers movies and is directing their upcoming The Jungle Book live-action adaptation), so I’d bet he’d be a more-likely candidate than the busy Vaughn. But, both would be solid picks.

Again, none of this is confirmed, so do stay tuned in the future as we all see how many of these Star Wars rumors end up on the screen.
