Fox Announces X-Men Spinoff ‘The New Mutants’

Josh Boone‘s career is off to a fast start, beginning with the success of The Fault in Our Stars, which then translated into a gig adapting Anne Rice‘s The Vampire Chronicles at Universal and plans for an adaptation of Stephen King‘s “The Stand” at Warner Bros. Now he’s taking on another big project at another major studio as he will begin work on the X-Men franchise spinoff The Mutant Chronicles at Fox, which he will direct and co-write with Jackass producer Knate Gwaltney.

The New Mutants is a group of teenaged mutant superheroes-in-training including characters such as Cannonball, Karma, Mirage, Sunspot and Wolfsbane and apparently served as the comic introduction to Deadpool, which may hint at a possible tie-in with the upcoming movie starring Ryan Reynolds.

“We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe,” producer Simon Kinberg told Deadline. “And so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”

The timeline for the project seems lengthy as “Deadline” says Boone will first direct The Vampire Chronicles, then The Stand, then The Mutant Chronicles after that. With Deadpool along the way along with X-Men: Apocalypse and Gambit starring Channing Tatum it would seem the mutant slate is full for now.
