X-Men ’97 fans won’t believe what Marvel just promised about the show’s future. A producer addressed the one concern hanging over the animated revival’s long-term plans.
You won’t have to wait two years for X-Men ’97 Season 3
Producer Larry Houston delivered a promising update on X-Men ’97 Season 3 in an exclusive interview with The Direct.
Houston confirmed that the lengthy gap between Seasons 1 and 2 will not repeat itself. He stated, “Luckily, the production problems won’t occur again. There was a huge gap of time between [season] one and two. They’ve learned their lessons, so with [seasons] three and four, that won’t happen again… That was a one-off.”
Houston is currently working on the third season’s production. He also reassured fans about the upcoming episodes’ quality. He told viewers, “Trust me, as a fan, you will enjoy it.” His involvement dates back to the original X-Men cartoon, where he served as director.
Brad Winderbaum, Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios, separately confirmed Season 3’s active production status. He hinted at an annual release plan as the studio’s ongoing goal for the series. Winderbaum also expressed hope for a fifth season, stating, “I hope it runs at least 5 seasons, because that’s as many seasons as the original series, so that would be really, that’d be really nice” (via ScreenRant).
Season 2 arrives on Disney+ on July 1 with three episodes dropping together. The remaining six episodes will then roll out on a weekly basis until August 12. The nine-episode run picks up after Season 1’s finale scattered the team across time.
Cyclops and Jean Grey remain stranded in the far future. Meanwhile, Rogue, Charles Xavier, Nightcrawler, Magneto, and Beast appear in ancient Egypt. Their mission to regroup sends them into conflict with En Sabah Nur, one of the immortal mutants.
Meanwhile, Season 4 already holds a greenlit status from Disney+ and Marvel Studios. Development on that fourth season proceeds alongside Season 3’s ongoing production. Additionally, Season 1 currently holds a 99% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 2 debuted at 100% based on 20 reviews.
