‘Captain America 3’ is Turning into ‘Age of Ultron’ Redux & ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ to be Shot Entirely in IMAX

We already knew Chadwick Boseman would be making his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War before starring in his own feature film, currently slated for July 2018. In fact, the film will also feature the first appearance of Captain Marvel and the rebooted Spider-Man, and now we learn Paul Rudd will play a part in the film as Ant-Man while at the same time it has been confirmed Emily VanCamp will reprise her role as Sharon Carter/Agent 13 from Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Suffice to say, this film is turning into just another Avengers: Age of Ultron, overloaded with characters. In fact, here’s the list of characters you’ll find in Civil War:

  • Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America
  • Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man
  • Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow
  • Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier
  • Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon
  • Paul Bettany as The Vision
  • Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye
  • Don Cheadle as Jim Rhodes/War Machine
  • Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch
  • Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man
  • Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther
  • Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter/Agent 13
  • Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones
  • William Hurt as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross

And that’s just the confirmed members of the cast, but that should make it good practice for directors Joe and Anthony Russo as they have even bigger things in their future.

The Russo brothers will be directing the final two films in the the MCU’s “Phase Three”, culminating with Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 and Part 2 on May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019 respectively. And it was reported this morning the two-part installment will be shot in their entirety using IMAX and ARRI’s next generation 2D digital camera, the Alexa 65. So, yes, this means you will be getting the full IMAX aspect ratio for this one, which does add a considerable amount of intrigue as hopefully it works out and more filmmakers join the IMAX movement.

The Russos will use the IMAX/ARRI 2D digital camera for select action sequences on Captain America: Civil War and said in a press release, “The intent with the Infinity War films is to bring ten years of accumulative storytelling to an incredible climax. We felt that the best way to exploit the scale and scope required to close out the final chapter of these three phases, was to be the first films shot entirely on the IMAX/ARRI Digital camera.”

“Over the years, IMAX has had the incredible good fortune to work with some of the world’s finest, most talented filmmakers, who continue to push the envelope both technically and creatively,” said Greg Foster, Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment. “We could not be more excited to deepen our partnership with Joe and Anthony Russo, a pair of filmmakers we believe are next-generation trailblazers. Marvel’s Avengers franchise has become a global phenomenon and to have it pay off in this epic way using the IMAX/ARRI digital camera is the very definition of event movie-going.”

IMAX recently began rolling out its next-generation laser projection system, with more than 71 laser system deals signed globally to date. We happen to have one of the first here in Seattle at the Boeing IMAX Theatre at Pacific Science Center, though I haven’t yet seen a film using the projector yet. The last feature I saw there was Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar, which just so happened to be the last movie this particular theater will ever show on IMAX film… it’s all digital now folks.
