The most under-the-radar, young adult release of last year had to be The Maze Runner. Made for a reported $34 million, the film ended up grossing $340.7 million worldwide and remained in domestic theaters for 20 weeks. This year we’ll get the next installment in the franchise, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, and now we have our first look at the upcoming sequel.
Here’s the plot:
Solving the Maze was supposed to be the end. Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) was sure that escape from the Maze would mean freedom for him and the Gladers. But Wicked isn’t done yet. Phase Two has just begun. The Scorch. There are no rules. There is no help. You either make it or you die. The Gladers have two weeks to cross through the Scorch — the most burned-out section of the world. And Wicked has made sure to adjust the variables and stack the odds against them. Friendships will be tested. Loyalties will be broken. All bets are off. There are others now. Their survival depends on the Gladers’ destruction–and they’re determined to survive.
Directed by Wes Ball, based on the novel by James Dashner, Scorch Trials sees Dylan O’Brien back in the lead role, joined by Aidan Gillen, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Sangster, Jacob Lofland, Rosa Salazar, Giancarlo Esposito and Barry Pepper. The film is set for a September 18 release, one day shy of the one year anniversary of the first one.
