Felicity Jones Lands Female Lead in Gareth Edwards ‘Star Wars’ Spin-Off

Felicity Jones has been making waves for some time, but 2014 was clearly a breakout year as she landed an Oscar nomination for her role in The Theory of Everything and now she’s beat out the likes of Rooney Mara, Kate Mara and Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) for the lead female role in Gareth Edwards‘ (Godzilla) Untitled Star Wars Project.

It’s an interesting announcement considering many outlets were reporting over recent days that Maslany had the role. That said, new rumors suggest Maslany may still be in the running to play a character named Sabine Wren, a character from the animated “Star Wars: Rebels” series.

THR has the report and while there are no concrete details on what the plot of the film will be, one recent report says it will focus on a group of bounty hunters prepping to steal the plans for the Death Star. Add to that, rumors have Aaron Paul being considered to play a young Han Solo (which he’s denied) and now THR adds Edgar Ramirez to the mix of rumored names for the male lead.

So far all we know for sure is Edwards is directing, Jones is starring, Chris Weitz recently took over scripting duties from Gary Whitta and the film is set for a December 16, 2016 release.
