Linklater’s ‘That’s What I’m Talking About’ Will Pick Up Where ‘Boyhood’ Left Off

Richard Linklater‘s next film is That’s What I’m Talking About, a film that’s been described as a “spiritual sequel” to his excellent 1993 feature Dazed and Confused (read my thoughts on that one here), but in a new interview with Creative Screenwriting (via Slashfilm) he reveals it will also hold a special connection to his latest movie, Boyhood:

Well, I think the word “spiritual” gets me off the hook. I just shot it and wrapped it recently, and it has nothing to do with Dazed and Confused other than it would be set four years later, when one of the younger characters went off to college. It’s a party film. It’s really about the beginning of school, not the end of the school year. I guess personally or autobiographically it’s kind of in that realm, but it’s also a continuation of Boyhood, believe it or not. I don’t know if one film can be a sequel to two different movies, but it begins right where Boyhood ends with a guy showing up at college and meeting his new roommates and a girl. It overlaps with the end of Boyhood.

[amz asin=”B00MEQUNIW” size=”small”]This doesn’t mean Ellar Coltrane will be back as Mason from Boyhood, it simply means that just as Boyhood ended with Mason’s first days in college, meeting people, including a girl, That’s What I’m Talking About will follow suit. The ’80s set movie will follow the first few days of an incoming college freshman who experiences his first weekend in college as a pitcher on the school’s baseball team, as he and his cohorts navigate the freedom and responsibility associated with their parent-free surroundings.

With the film wrapped and Paramount signed on to distribute it would seem we’ll be seeing this one sooner rather than later and based on the description it sounds like Linklater might be releasing another movie right up my alley.
