Disney has announced Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will hit theaters on July 7, 2017. No other details are known though Johnny Depp is expected to star and, for the moment, Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg are still attached to direct.
After leaving the Ant-Man production, it looks like Edgar Wright has found his next film in Baby Driver, a crime-themed action thriller of which he will write and was first attached to back in 2008 when it was referred to as a wild spin on the action and crime genre which will be set in the US. Nothing else is known at this time. [Deadline]
Cameron Crowe‘s untitled new film starring Emma Stone and Bradley Cooper was set to hit theaters on Christmas Day, but has now been bumped to May 29, 2015. I guess Sony thinks they may have a summer hit on their hands and not much of an awards player. Nothing wrong with that.
Following Wild, director Jean-Marc Vallee‘s next film will be a dramedy titled Demolition with Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts set to star. Based on the 2007 Black List script by Bryan Sipe, the film follows a young investment banker (Gyllenhaal) struggling to understand his emotional disconnect following the tragic death of his wife in an auto accident. As he tears apart his life in a distraught effort to see where he went wrong, he becomes obsessed with destruction and develops a unique relationship with a single mother (Watts) who rescues him. Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone), Alan Alda (The Aviator), Billy Magnussen (“Boardwalk Empire”) and Eve Hewson (“The Knick”) have joined Tom Hanks in Steven Spielberg‘s Untitled Cold War Thriller, which follows James Donovan (Hanks), the American attorney enlisted by the CIA during the Cold War to surreptitiously negotiate the 1962 release of Francis Gary Powers, the U-2 spy plane pilot who was shot down over Russia two years earlier. Vin Diesel has confirmed a third xXx film is on the way saying, “I am going to do the next xXx which will be filming in part in the Philippines, which I’m very, very, very excited about.” [Collider]
Idris Elba is in talks to star in Guy Ritchie‘s Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur, playing Bedivere, right hand man to Arthur’s father, tasked with teaching Arthur how to lead an army. No one has yet been cast as Arthur and the film isn’t set to hit theaters until July 22, 2016. The updated title suggests they clearly have an eye on turning this into a franchise, most likely with a sequel titled something along the lines of Knights of the Roundtable: Lancelot and so forth. Elba previously starred in RocknRolla for Ritchie. [The Wrap]
Speaking with Adam Carolla, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn pretty much confirmed he’s coming back for the sequel saying:
“I’m actually in a somewhat weird position because if the movie does well, then I’m gonna make the sequel. And if it does okay then, well, I’ve already been offered other movies but I can only do those other movies if I don’t do the sequel, so it’s a weird situation.”
Considering the film is pretty much guaranteed to do well let’s just go ahead and say Gunn is coming back. [Adam Carolla]
