Bruckheimer Talks ‘Pirates 5’, ‘Bad Boys 3’ and ‘National Treasure 3’

What’s next for Michael Bay? We know the expectation is to have a Transformers 5 in 2016 and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently told SlashFilm he really wants Bay to return, having “found the right mix” for the franchise. One thing Bay could do, should things work out, is return to the Bad Boys franchise to complete a trilogy, something producer Jerry Bruckheimer tells Collider is still in the works.

“We’re working on [a Bad Boys 3] outline right now,” Bruckheimer told the site. “Hopefully we’ll get a screenplay in the next three months. And that will become a movie I hope… we always focus on the place where the action’s going to take place, which is Miami. We research it and figure out what’s actually going on down in Miami with criminals and what they’re doing. We bring in experts. And that’s how the screenplays evolve.”

I just wonder if they could possibly get Bay, Martin Lawrence and Will Smith to return for a third film and not break the bank when it comes to the budget. Then again, I think a Bad Boys 3 would make a huge amount of money so it just might be worth it.

In addition to this Bruckheimer offered an update on Pirates of the Caribbean 5, which was previously dated for July 10, 2015, but is now without a release date and who knows how long Kon-Tiki helmers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg will stick around before moving on to something else.

So what’s the status? Well, it sounds like they are still working on the screenplay, “I think we’re back to more of a straight pirates movie this time.” And as for the possibility of any giant sea monsters he added, “Not in the script I read recently,” which makes it sound like they are still tinkering.

Then we come to National Treasure 3, the last of which, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, brought in $457.3 million worldwide back in 2007 so it’s a wonder they haven’t returned for a third yet. Lord knows Nicolas Cage is ready to return as treasure hunter Ben Gates and Bruckheimer reveals franchise director John Turteltaub is also still with the franchise.

When asked about the chance of the third film happening, Bruckheimer said, “Yeah, we’re working on another National Treasure. We just had a meeting on Friday with the writers and the director, so hopefully that will come together. New writers, same director; John Turteltaub.”

So what is Gates looking for this time? No word, but I’m sure it will be hidden very well, yet easily attained and someone else will want it really bad. Just a hunch though.
