Your Box Office Predictions as ‘Transformers 4’ Takes in $8.75 Million On Thursday Night

Transformers: Age of Extinction screened in 2,990 theaters last night and brought in a reported $8.75 million, $1.4M of which came from IMAX screenings. This is a marked decline from Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which brought in $13.5 million from late night screenings back in 2011. Tracking for the picture has it coming in at $110 million and to look at Laremy’s predictions and reader averages (see below) you would think this would be the first $100+ million opener of 2014, but I can’t help but believe this thing is coming in around $88 million.

When it comes to Transformers films, here’s the opening breakdown for the first three:

  1. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) – $108,966,307
  2. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) – $97,852,865
  3. Transformers (2007) – $70,502,384

The declining figures are right there for all to see. So $100+ million? I don’t think so, especially not with that 165-minute running time eating away at extra screenings and the likelihood of people seeing the film more than once.

For the sake of comparison, X-Men: Days of Future Past brought in $8.1 million from Thursday night showings and ended up opening with $90.8 million. It also had a shorter run time and better reviews.

I’ve included Laremy’s predictions and the average reader predictions directly below and I’ll be back on Sunday with box office estimates. To see Laremy’s full list of predictions and all 90 reader predictions for this weekend click here.
