Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie Takes Over $10 Million Box Office on Thursday Previews

Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s movie has started on very strong footing at the box office with an impressive Thursday previews take.

Box Office Killer Animatronics

Ahead of the video game adpatation’s wide release today in theaters and on Peacock, early showings brought in a frighteningly good $10.3 million box office revenue.

The movie was already projected to have a very healthy opening weekend of around $50 million, and the evidence from the previews suggests that will indeed be the case, with even higher numbers possible.

If it does reach those numbers, then it would instantly become the year’s highest opening for a horror movie in a very good year for the genre. Blumhouse stablemates M3GAN and The Exorcist: Believer only surpassed the $50 million mark combined. Meanwhile, Scream VI and The Nun 2 posted commendable opening weekend numbers of $44 million and $32 million, respectively.

The video game series created by Scott Cawthon has a dedicated fanbase, and was an early staple in the boom of YouTube Let’s Play creators. The series has spawned spinoffs, books, toys, and even board games since its inception in 2014.

The Five Nights at Freddy’s movie tells the story of a troubled security guard as he begins working at the dilapidated Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. During his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be as dull as it seems because the animatronics come to life, and are not as warm and friendly as they’re supposed to be.

The movie stars Josh Hutcherson (Ultraman, The Hunger Games), Elizabeth Lail (You, Mack & Rita), Piper Rubio (Holly & Ivy, Unstable), Kat Conner Sterling (We Have A Ghost, 9-1-1), with Mary Stuart Masterson (Blindspot, Fried Green Tomatoes) and Matthew Lillard (Scooby Doo, Scream). Five Nights at Freddy’s is directed by Emma Tammi (The Wind, Blood Moon) and is written by Scott Cawthon, Emma Tammi, and Seth Cuddeback.
