I think one of the biggest issues I have with most of Guillermo del Toro‘s films, at least films such as Hellboy, Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Pacific Rim is del Toro and I don’t share a sense of humor. I love the guy’s sense of darkness, fantasy and drama, but man, when he’s trying to make a joke you won’t find me laughing.
So, when I read Ron Perlman telling HeyUGuys he’s fighting every day for a Hellboy 3 I can’t help but wonder if there is a large enough audience interested in the fight.
Speaking with the site Perlman said, “I’d like to finish it. I’d like for there to be a third film because the first two films were set up for this huge resolve and [Guillermo del Toro] already understands what that resolve will look like. He never gave me the nuts and bolts of it, but he gave me a rather broad strokes sketch of what the third film would look like and it’s so epic and so deserved by the fans that hung in there for the first two that I really feel as though it’s essential that we make it. So I fight for it every day. Sometimes I’m the only voice and sometimes there are others, but I’m never going to stop trying to get Hellboy 3 made!”
A couple things here, why is it always considered three films are necessary to “finish” a movie franchise? Is it Star Wars that decided that or what? Because by the time Star Wars came to an end it was known it was three movies in what was at least a six-part story.
Secondly, there’s a weird vibe I get from the statement “the fans that hung in there for the first two”. It almost sounds like, Thanks for giving them a chance, but hopefully we can nail this thing the third time.
As for the chances of a Hellboy 3 getting made, I don’t see it. The rights are back with Sony and unless something happens really soon I see little chance for more Hellboy.
Oh, and by the way Mr. Perlman, fighting every day to get it made? You can probably dial that back to once or twice a month at best.
